Dyson Stayt Wilson, known as Tug, was born in Wilderness, South Africa, on 7 October 1926. He was educated in the United Kingdom, first at Rydal School in north Wales, and then at King Edward VII Grammar School in Stafford. He worked as an officer in the Metropolitan Police for whom he played club rugby; he also played for Harlequins, was captain of the Middlesex county side in 1954/55, and for London Counties against New Zealand in 1953. Between 1953 and 1955 he gained eight caps for England at wing-forward. His five appearances for the Barbarians included the captaincy against East Midlands in 1955.
