Martyn Elwyn Williams

Martyn Elwyn Williams was born in Pontypridd on 1 September 1975 and educated at Coed-y-Lan School. He represented Wales as a junior at all age-groups before joining Pontypridd for whom he scored 24 tries in 98 appearances between 1994 and 1999. His first cap for Wales as an open-side flanker was against the Barbarians in 1996 and two years later he became a Barbarian himself in the Mobbs Memorial Match against East Midlands. In 2003 he captained Wales against the Barbarians. In 2007 he was a try-scorer and voted man-of-the-match when the Barbarians beat South Africa 22-5 at Twickenham. In 2010 he was on the Barbarians' summer tour, playing against England and Ireland, and at the end of the same year was again a member of a Barbarians' team that beat the Springboks. Another summer tour with the Barbarians followed in 2011, including the victorious match against Wales at the Millennium Stadium. Three months later he was back in the Wales' side as captain and gained his 99th cap in the victory over Argentina. His 100th cap, and final first-class game, was for Wales against the Barbarians in 2012. Martyn Williams joined Cardiff in 1999 and captained the club for three seasons from 2002. He went on three British Isles' tours between 2001 and 2009, playing in 17 games, including four tests.
