William Raymond Watkins

William Raymond Watkins was born in Newbridge on 22 March 1933 and educated at the local grammar school and St Luke's College, Exeter. He played scrum-half for Newbridge, Pontypool and eventually Newport where he was a player when called up as an eleventh-hour replacement for A.A.Mulligan in the Barbarians' team that beat South Africa in 1961. Billy Watkins gained one cap for Wales against France in 1959.
