Gordon Herbert Waddell

Gordon Herbert Waddell was born in Glasgow on 12 April 1937 and educated at St Mary's School, Melrose, Fettes College, Cambridge University (where he gained three Blues between 1958 and 1961 and played against the Springboks in 1960) and Stanford University in the USA. He did his National Service as a Royal Marine Commando and played for Devonport Services and the Royal Navy. At club level he played at fly-half for London Scottish. Between 1957 and 1962 he won 18 caps for Scotland and led the side in five games including the test against South Africa in Port Elizabeth in 1960. He twice toured with the British Isles - to New Zealand in 1959 when examinations and injury limited his appearances to ten (including seven tries) and South Africa in 1962 when his 12 appearances included the first two tests and he also scored 17 points. Gordon Waddell was the son of former Barbarians' president, Herbert Waddell [q.v.]. After working as a business executive he emigrated to South Africa and from 1974 to 1977 was a Member of Parliament for Johannesburg North. He returned to Scotland in 1987. He died on 13 August 2012, aged 75.
