Roger Miles Uttley
Roger Miles Uttley was born in Blackpool on 11 September 1949 and educated at Blackpool Grammar School and the Northumberland College of Education where he qualified as a teacher. He played club rugby for Gosforth and Wasps. After winning the first eleven of his 23 caps for England as a lock forward in 1973 he switched to the back row with great success and also captained his country five times in 1977 and 1979. In 1974 he toured South Africa with the British Isles where his 16 appearances included the four tests. Roger Uttley later became an England coach and team manager and in 1989 he was an assistant coach on the British Isles tour of Australia. His four Easter tours with the Barbarians included the captaincy against Cardiff in 1977.
