Alan James Tomes

Alan James Tomes was born in Hawick on 6 November 1951 and educated at Hawick High School and Heathfield Grammar School in Gateshead. He worked in banking and as a gas executive. He played at lock for Hawick and for the South of Scotland against a succession of international touring teams - Australia in 1975 and 1984, New Zealand in 1979 and 1983, and Fiji in 1982. Between 1976 and 1987 he gained 48 caps for Scotland and also played for a Scottish XV against Japan in 1976 and 1977 and Fiji in 1982. In 1980 he played for Scotland & Ireland against England & Wales. He toured South Africa with the British Isles in 1980 and played in seven provincial matches.
