William Charles Common Steele

William Charles Common Steele was born in Langholm on 18 April 1947 and educated at Langholm Academy. He joined the RAF as a PE instructor and represented Combined Services against Fiji (1970), New Zealand (1972) and Australia (1975). He also represented Scottish Districts against New Zealand in 1972. At club level he played for Langholm, Bedford and London Scottish. Between 1969 and 1977 he scored six tries in 23 internationals for Scotland; he also scored four tries in an uncapped match against Tonga in 1974. In 1972 he played for Scotland & Ireland against England & Wales at Murrayfield. On the 1974 British Isles' tour of South Africa Billy Steele scored seven tries in nine matches, including two tests.
