Stephen Rider Smith

Stephen Rider Smith was born in India on 21 October 1934 to missionary parents. Educated in England, he eventually went to Cambridge University where he captained the side in 1959. Earlier that year he had won the first of his five caps for England at scrum-half. His Barbarian debut had been against Leicester in 1957 and his six games for the Club encompassed all the regular fixtures on the calendar: as well as Leicester, the Mobbs Memorial Match and the four Welsh clubs at Easter. His home club was Richmond before he returned to Calcutta as an educational missionary. He later settled in England and became a headteacher.Steve Smith died on 9 August 2010, aged 75.
