Hamilton Augustus Haigh Smith

Hamilton Augustus Haigh Smith was born on 21 October 1884. Generally known as 'Jack' or amongst Barbarian colleagues as 'Haigho', he was secretary of the Club from 1925 and 1955. In August 1955 he succeeded Emile de Lissa [see Roll of Honour - Profiles] and became the third President. Tragically, he died a few weeks later on 28 October, aged 71. Jack Haigh Smith was educated at Marlborough College and later became a captain in the Hampshire Regiment. He played at prop for Trojans, Blackheath and Hampshire and was the county's representative on the Rugby Football Union. He also served on the Four Home Unions Tours Committee and in 1938 was assistant manager of the British Isles team that toured South Africa.
