William John Smit

John William Smit was born in Pietersburg, South Africa, on 3 April 1978 and educated at Pretoria Boys High School and Pietermaritzburg University. He played at hooker and prop for Natal and the Sharks and for one season with Clermont Auvergne. First capped by South Africa in 2000, he played in his 100th test match in 2010. He captained South Africa from 2004 and led them to victory in the 2007 Rugby World Cup Final. He played for South Africa against the Barbarians at the Mllennium Stadium in 2000 and eight years later captained the Barbarians against Australia at Wembley Stadium.
