Donald Rutherford

Donald Rutherford was born in Tynemouth on 22 September 1937 and educated at Tynemouth High School and St Luke's College, Exeter. He played at full-back for Percy Park,Preston Grasshoppers, Wasps and Gloucester and at county level for Gloucestershire and Northumberland. He was the club captain at Gloucester in 1967/68. He played for the North-Eastern Counties against South Africa in 1960 and New Zealand in 1964 and for the South of England against New Zealand in 1967. Between 1960 and 1967 he scored 41 points in 14 internationals for England. In 1966 he toured Australasia with the British Isles and scored 55 points in 11 appearances, including one test. Don Rutherford captained the Barbarians against Leicester in 1967 and Penarth in 1968. Originally a schoolteacher, he became Director of Rugby for the RFU between 1969 and 1999.
