Dean Richards

Dean Richards was born in Nuneaton on 11 July 1963 and educated at John Cleveland College, Hinckley. After playing briefly for Roanne in France he returned to England and joined the Leicestershire Constabulary. His senior club rugby was then exclusively with Leicester and he captained the Tigers for four seasons, in two spells, between 1989 and 1995. In 1993 he captained the Midlands against New Zealand having also represented the region as a replacement in the victory over the All Blacks in 1983. He also played against Australia in 1988 and again as captain against South Africa in 1992. Between 1986 and 1996 he gained 48 caps at number 8 for England. On successive British Isles' tours to Australia in 1989 and New Zealand in 1993 he made 12 appearances, including all six tests, and led the Lions twice - against Australia B in 1989 and Canterbury in 1993. Dean Richards later became a coach at Leicester, Grenoble, Harlquins and Newcastle Falcons.
