David Lewes Powell

David Lewes Powell was born in Rugby on 17 May 1942 and educated at Daventry Grammar School. He played at prop in 370 games for Northampton between 1963 and 1978 and captained the club for four seasons. Between 1966 and 1971 he played in 11 internationals for England and on the 1966 British Isles' tour of Australasia he made 16 appearances. A regular in the Mobbs Memorial Match, he captained the East Midlands in the 1972 fixture. He also captained the Barbarians against Neath in 1971 and Newport in 1974. Originally a farmer, in his later years he was groundsman for Northampton RFC at Franklin's Gardens.
