Alan John Phillips

Alan John Phillips was born in Kenfig Hill on 21 August 1954 and educated at Kenfig Comprehensive School. Originally a window cleaner, he later became a company director and in 2002 was apppointed team manager for the Wales national squad. He played at hooker for Cardiff for 15 seasons and set a new club record of 481 first team appearances and for a forward a remarkable 162 tries. He was club captain between 1985 and 1987 when the team won the Welsh Cup in both seasons. He was also a member of the sides that beat Australia in 1975 and 1984 and later became coach in 1989. He gained 18 caps for Wales between 1979 and 1987 and made seven appearances for the British Isles in South Africa in 1980. Alan Phillips captained the Barbarians against Leicester in 1985 and Bristol in 1987. He is the father of Ben Phillips [q.v.]
