Barry George Nelmes

Barry George Nelmes was born in Bristol on 17 April 1948 and educated at Portway School in the city. Originally a lock forward who switched to become an international-class prop, he initially played for Bristol and also the Western Counties XV against successive touring teams from the southern hemisphere. In 1973 he joined Cardiff and captained the club in 1978/79. He gained six caps for England between 1975 and 1978 and played for the Barbarians six times, including as a replacement against New Zealand in 1978. Barry Nelmes died on 1 December 2006, aged 58.
