John Gervase Maurice Walker Murphy
John Gervase Maurice Walker Murphy was born in Bangor, Co Down, on 20 August 1926 and was a divinity student at Methodist College, Belfast, and Dublin University before becoming an army chaplain.He later became a chaplain to HM Queen Elizabeth II at Sandringham. He won the first of his six caps for Ireland at full-back against South Africa in 1952 and also played against New Zealand in 1954. Originally a member of the Lurgan club, he was with London Irish when he was invited to play for the Barbarians in the 1958 Mobbs Memorial Match. Gerry Murphy died on 7 January 2014 aged 87.
