Andrew Armstrong Mulligan

Andrew Armstrong Mulligan was born in India on 4 February 1936 and educated at Gresham's School and Cambridge University where he gained three Blues at scrum-half, 1955 to 1957. He later played club rugby for Wanderers in Dublin and London Irish. Between 1956 and 1961 he won 22 caps for Ireland and was captain in three internationals in 1960. In 1959 he joined the British Isles tour of New Zealand as a replacement and played in 13 games, including the victorious fourth test in Auckland. A popular Barbarian, he played 20 times for the Club, including Australia in 1958 and the tours to Canada (1957) and South Africa (1958). He was forced to withdraw from the team that beat South Africa in 1961 on the morning of the match. He captained the Barbarians three times on Easter tours, against Cardiff in 1959 and Penarth and Newport in 1962. Andy Mulligan died on 24 February 2001, aged 65.
