Karl Daniel Mullen

Karl Daniel Mullen was born in Co Wexford on 26 November 1926 and played at hooker for the Old Belvedere club. In 1945-46 he played for Ireland in four Victory internationals before winning the first of his 25 full caps against France in 1947. The following year he captained Ireland to an historic Triple Crown and Grand Slam and went on to lead his country in 15 internationals. He was also captain of the British Isles in Australasia in 1950, playing in 17 games, including three tests. A distinguished gynaecologist in his professional life, he also led the Barbarians against Leicester in 1948 and in the same year was in the side that played Australia at Cardiff Arms Park. Karl Mullen died on 27 April 2009, aged 82.
