Nigel David Melville

Nigel David Melville was born in Leeds on 6 January 1961 and educated at Aireborough Grammar School and North-East London Polytechnic. He played at scrum-half for Otley, Wakefield and Wasps and for the victorious North of England XV against Fiji in 1982. Between 1984 and 1988 he captained England in seven of his 13 internationals - setting a new record as youngest national captain. In 1983 he joined the British Isles' tour of New Zealand as a replacement, only to suffer a spinal injury himself in his second game. Nigel Melville later became director of rugby at Wasps and Gloucester and in 2006 commenced a similar role at international level with the USA Rugby Union.
