Raymond John McLoughlin

Raymond John McLoughlin was born in Ballinasloe on 24 August 1939 and educated at Garbally College, Newcastle University, and University College, Dublin. He played club rugby for Blackrock College and Gosforth and between 1962 and 1975 gained 40 caps at prop for Ireland; he was captain in eight internationals. In 1966 he toured Australasia with the British Isles, playing in 17 games, including three tests. Five years later, his next tour was less successful when he was injured in his fifth appearance, the notorious game against Canterbury. Having qualified as a chemical engineer, Ray McLoughlin later went into business. He captained the Barbarians against Leicester in 1972.
