James Stephen McCarthy

James Stephen McCarthy was born in Cork on 30 January 1926 and educated at CBC in the city. His early work was as a house decorator but in later years became a business associate of A J F O'Reilly [q.v.]. A member of the Dolphin club, Jim McCarthy played at wing-forward for Ireland in 28 internationals between 1948 and 1955 and led his country four times and set a new record for a forward of eight test tries.He also played for Munster against Australia (1947), South Africa (1951) and as captain against New Zealand (1953). In 1950 he toured with the British Isles to New Zealand and Australia and played in 13 matches.
