Haydn James Mainwaring
Haydn James Mainwaring was born in Swansea on 10 June 1933. He played senior rugby for the Royal Navy, Swansea, Harlequins, London Welsh and Newport and was equally at home in the back row of the scrum or as a centre or full-back. His ten games for the Barbarians between 1957 and 1961 included four Easter tours and the famous victory over the previously unbeaten Springboks in 1961. Called in as a late replacement at full-back he made the famous tackle that stopped the charging South African lock and captain Avril Malan. A month later he won his only cap for Wales - at centre against France. In later years he became a member of the Barbarians' committee from 1989 until 2008 and in 2012 was appointed a vice-president.
