Thomas Joseph Kiernan

Thomas Joseph Kiernan was born in Cork on 7 January 1939 and educated at Presentation College and University College, Cork. He played at full-back for the Constitution club. Between 1960 and 1973 he set new records for appearances and scoring for Ireland with 135 points in 54 internationals; he also captained his country 24 times. In 1962 he played in 10 games, including one test, for the British Isles in South Africa. Six years later he toured there again as Lions' captain and scored 84 points in 13 matches including a series record of 35 in the four tests. In later years Tom Kiernan became president of the IRFU in 1988/89. He captained the Barbarians against Swansea in 1965.
