Tyrone Gyle Howe was born in Newtownards, Northern Ireland, on 2 April 1971 and educated at Banbridge Academy, St Andrews University and Oxford University. He gained two Blues at Oxford in 1994 and 1995 and was captain in his second Varsity Match. He qualified as a teacher and also worked in local politics in Belfast. He played on the wing for Dungannon and in 100 games for Ulster. Between 2000 and 2004 he scored six tries in 14 tests for Ireland. In 2001 he joined the British Isles' tour of Australia as a replacement and played against New South Wales Country XV. Tyrone Howe toured with the Barbarians to Tunisia and Spain in 2007.
