Raymond Hopkins

Raymond Hopkins, known as 'Chico', was born in Maesteg on 8 July 1946. He captained Wales Youth in 1965 before several seasons of senior club rugby with Maesteg. He later joined Llanelli and was in the team that defeated New Zealand in 1972. In 1970 he gained his only cap for Wales as a replacement for Gareth Edwards against England in 1970 and scored the winning try. The following year he again replaced Edwards for the British Isles in the victorious first test against New Zealand. On tour with the Lions he made 11 appearances. He also played for England & Wales against Scotland & Ireland at Murrayfield in 1972. Originally a fitter and later a sales representative, he transferred to Swinton rugby league club in December 1972.
