Richard C. Hawkes

Richard C. Hawkes was born in Somerset in 1926 and educated at Imperial Service College. He first played county rugby for Somerset before moving to Northampton and becoming a fixture at lock forward for the local club team. His impressive performances for East Midlands in three consecutive Mobbs Memorial Matches between 1951 and 1953 gained him an invitation to play for the Barbarians against Leicester in December 1953. Two months later he was an uncapped member of the Barbarians' pack against New Zealand at Cardiff Arms Park. Though he never won international honours, Dick Hawkes played in England trial matches and was also a reserve for the full England team.
