Raymond William Robert Gravell

Raymond William Robert Gravell was born in Kidwelly on 12 September 1951 and educated at Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, Carmarthen. In senior rugby he was a one-club man, making 485 appearances for Llanelli, including the famous victory over New Zealand in 1972, scoring 120 tries, and was captain from 1980 to 1982. He later became president of the club. Originally employed in the electricity industry, after retiring from playing he became a popular broadcaster and actor on Welsh television. Between 1975 and 1982 he gained 23 caps at centre for Wales and also played once on the wing in a 'non-cap' international against Romania in 1979. On the 1980 British Isles tour of South Africa he made eleven appearances, including the four tests. As a Barbarian he toured Canada in 1976 and played against Australia the same year and the British Isles at Twickenham in 1977. Ray Gravell died on 31 October 2007, aged 56.
