Eric Evans

Eric Evans was born in Droylsden on 1 February 1921 and educated at Audenshaw Grammar School and Loughborough College. He gave many years service as hooker in the Sale pack and won 30 caps for England between 1948 and 1958. He also captained England in 13 matches, including the Grand Slam season of 1957. A celebrated Barbarian with 18 appearances, he made five Easter tours and was in the pioneering side to Canada in 1957 when the injuries' toll meant he played one game against British Columbia All-Stars at prop. He also played against New Zealand at Cardiff Arms Park in 1954 and was Barbarians' captain on four occasions - against Leicester in 1954, Newport in 1956 and 1958, and Ontario on the Canadian tour. Eric Evans died on 12 January 1991, aged 69.
