William Irving Douglas Elliot

William Irving Douglas Elliot was born in Stow, Midlothian, on 18 April 1923. One of the finest back-row forwards of his generation, he played his club rugby for Edinburgh Academicals. As a farmer his work commitments made him unavailable for the 1950 British Isles tour of Australasia. He won 29 caps for Scotland between 1947 and 1954 and was captain on seven occasions. His five appearances for the Barbarians included the pioneering games against Australia in 1948 and South Africa four years later. Douglas Elliot died on 12 March 2005, aged 81.
