Michael Gerard (Martin) Doyle

Michael Gerard Martin Doyle was born in Castleisland, Co Kerry, on 13 October 1941 and educated at Newbridge College, University College Dublin, Edinburgh University, and Cambridge University where he gained a Blue in 1965. While a student in Edinburgh he played for the Edinburgh Wanderers club and when working as a veterinary surgeon in Ireland he rejoined UCD. At provincial level he represented Leinster, including the match against New Zealand in 1964, and captained the Irish Provinces XV to victory over Australia in 1968. Between 1965 and 1968 he won 20 caps at flank forward for Ireland. He toured South Africa with the British Isles in 1968 and played in 11 matches, including the first test. In 1979 he became coach of Leinster and then from 1984 to 1987 was national coach of Ireland. Mick Doyle was killed in a car crash on 11 May 2004, aged 63.
