William Philip Cathcart Davies

William Philip Cathcart Davies was born in Worcestershire on 6 August 1928 and educated at Denstone College and Cambridge University. He played senior rugby for Cheltenham and, mainly, Harlequins. He gained 11 caps in the centre for England between 1953 and 1958. On the 1955 British Isles tour of South Africa he scored eight tries in 14 games, including three tests. He played for the Barbarians against New Zealand in 1954 alongside his England and Lions' midfield partner, Jeff Butterfield [q.v.]. In his professional life Phil Davies was a successful headteacher.
