Alexander Bennett Carmichael

Alexander Bennett Carmichael, known as Sandy, was born in Glasgow on 2 February 1944 and educated at Loretto School. He worked for a plant hire firm and played club rugby for West of Scotland. His 50 international matches between 1967 and 1978 made him Scotland's most-capped prop. His first British Isles' tour to Australasia in 1971 was curtailed to six appearances after suffering a multiple fracture of the cheekbone against Canterbury. Three years later he toured with the Lions again and played in ten matches in South Africa. He was also a regular invitee for the Barbarians, touring North America in 1976 when he was captain against Quebec, and nearer home he played against Australia in 1967 and 1976 and in the famous victory over New Zealand in 1973.
