William David Charles Carling

William David Charles Carling was born in Bradford-on-Avon on 12 December 1965 and educated at Sedbergh School and Durham University. He originally joined the Army but subsequently worked in marketing and, after his playing days, as a motivational speaker. He played at centre for Harlequins. Will Carling set a new record by captaining England in 59 of his 72 internationals between 1988 and 1997. In 1993 he toured New Zealand with the British Isles and played in seven matches,including the first test. He captained the side against Waikato. He also led the Barbarians in the Hong Kong Sevens in 1991 and against Leicester in 1989 and Australia in 1992.
