John Carleton was born in Orrell on 24 November 1955 and educated at Upholland Grammar School and Chester College where he qualified as a teacher. He later worked in business. He played on the wing for Orrell and was a member of the Northern Division XV that defeated the All Blacks in 1979. He also played for Lancashire against Australia in 1981. Between 1979 and 1984 he scored seven tries in 26 internationals for England, including a hat-trick in the 1980 Calcutta Cup match. In the same year he played for England & Wales against Scotland & Ireland. He twice toured with the British Isles - in 1980 to South Africa where he scored three tries in 10 matches, including three tests, and in 1983 to New Zealand where his nine tries in 11 matches, including three tests, featured four in the match against West Coast at Greymouth.
