David Howard Burcher

David Howard Burcher was born in Newport on 26 October 1951 and educated at Newport High School and St Luke's College, Exeter, where he qualified as a teacher. He later worked for a building society. He played at centre for Newport where he was club captain for two seasons from 1976 to 1978 and played against Tonga in 1974 and Australia in 1976. He also played for Monmouthshire against New Zealand in 1978. He later moved to Cardiff and played for the club against New Zealand in 1978. His four caps for Wales were all in 1977 and three years later he toured North America with Wales B. In 1977 he toured New Zealand with the British Isles and scored five tries in 14 appearances, including one test against the All Blacks and and final match against Fiji. David Burcher later became a Wales' selector.
