Following the hugely popular inaugural match last season, which featured 101-points in a dramatic and thrilling encounter, both sides will once again trade blows with Quins using the fixture as key preparation ahead of the 2023/24 Gallagher Premiership season.
Harlequins CEO Laurie Dalrymple said: “We’re delighted to welcome the Baabaas back to The Stoop. The match last season had absolutely everything, plenty of tries, some outstanding displays of skill and even a drop-kick conversion from Joe Marler! I know how much the Quins faithful enjoyed the occasion and we’re even more excited to see everyone pack The Stoop for a bumper afternoon of rugby.
“The Baabaas typically play a similar game style to Quins, we both love to attack, play with speed and score plenty of tries. It will be a great challenge for our squad and the perfect opportunity to ensure we start our Gallagher Premiership season the following week in strong form.”
The Barbarians have confirmed they will be led by an experienced coaching team from Australia. Head Coach Jason Gilmore (New South Wales Defence Coach) will be joined by Laurie Fisher (ACT Brumbies Forwards Coach), Nathan Grey (Australia U20 Coach and former Wallabies player) and Berrick Barnes (Australia Assistant Coach and former Wallabies player).
Head Coach Jason Gilmore commented: “To coach the Barbarians on a UK tour is an exciting challenge and I can’t wait to experience all the traditions that make it such an incredible opportunity. To be involved in a game between two great Club’s with such rich history will make for great viewing. We look forward to returning to The Stoop and bringing the Barbarians style of play with us.”
Laurie Fisher, Nathan Grey and Berrick Barnes also spoke of their excitement to coach the Barbarians.
“I’m honoured and excited to be part of the Barbarians coaching staff. I have great memories of my two coaching stints in European rugby and found the Premiership to be a challenging, exciting, and high-quality competition. The Premiership has a magnificent supporter base and indeed the atmosphere at The Stoop generated by the vocal and passionate Quins fans is an incredible experience,” Fisher said.
Grey commented: “Being asked to add to the fabric that is the Barbarians is very special. Playing Harlequins at The Stoop is a great opportunity and I look forward to adding to the team in my capacity and creating some great memories along the way. Every player’s goal is to be asked to play for the Barbarians, that’s no different from a coach’s perspective.”
Barnes added: “I’m thrilled to have this amazing opportunity to coach the Barbarians and be part of such an iconic rugby institution. The Barbarians represent all that is good about rugby and I can’t wait to rip in alongside three incredible Aussie coaches and bring a bit of fun and flair to The Stoop.”
