England’s World Cup Finalist defence coach and former Barbarian John Mitchell and South African legend Schalk Brits will join the Barbarians ahead of November’s tour.

Mitchell will again link up with England Head Coach Eddie Jones when the Barbarians take on Fiji for the Killik Cup at Twickenham on Saturday 16 November. Returning to the Home of England Rugby after a sensational Rugby World Cup 2019, which saw England’s run to the Final end in a heartbreaking defeat to an inspired South Africa, the England coaching duo will be looking for victory wih the Barbarians at Twickenham.

Mitchell made his first appearance for the Barbarians in 1996, playing three times and scoring two tries for the invitational side. He also brings with him outstanding coaching pedigree, having been head coach of the All Blacks, the USA Eagles and Sale Sharks amongst others.

He said: “I’m thrilled to be joining the Barbarians coaching set-up for the first time. Having had the honour of playing for the Barbarians, it is a real privilege to join the coaching team and I’m looking forward to teaming up with Eddie and putting on some great matches for rugby fans.

“It will be sensational to take on the Head Coach role for our match against Brazil as well. The squad is very exciting and I’m looking forward to taking the very unique Barbarians brand of rugby to Brazil for the first time.”

Jones and Mitchell will be drawing on a squad of rugby legends including three Rugby World Cup 2019 champions in Tendai “Beast” Mtawarira, Lukhanyo Am and Makazole Mapimpi, former Ireland captain Rory Best and French centre Mathieu Bastereaud in the first major rugby match to be staged at Twickenham following Rugby World Cup 2019 – and the only Autumn International to be played at Twickenham this year.

Mitchell will then lead the Barbarians when they head to Brazil to play the Tupis at the Estadio do Morumbi, home of Sao Paolo FC. The match will make the 24thinternational team the Barbarians have faced and it is an exciting time to visit the fast-developing rugby nation, who have beaten the USA and Canada in recent seasons to break into the top 30 in the world rankings.

When the Barbarians return to the UK, they head to Cardiff to face Wales in a double header against the men’s and women’s national sides – and the team will be joined by one of the most popular players to wear the Barbarians shirt.

South African legend Schalk Brits lit up the Rugby World Cup 2019 after being persuaded out of retirement by Springboks Head Coach Rassie Erasmus.

The 38-year-old played at no8 for the first time in a decade when he started against Namibia and won hearts the world over with his bows to the ball kids throughout the Tournament.

With eight appearances already for the Barbarians, he will be looking for another win to bookend a sensational Barbarians career. He started with a win over World Champions South Africa in 2007 and most recently turned out in the black-and-white in the 2018 victory against Argentina.

He will join fellow legendary hooker Rory Best in the squad and Brits, Best and the Beast will all be appearing in their final games when they line up against Wales at the Principality Stadium on 30 November.
