Barbarian FC’s 2020 fixtures will get underway with an early May women’s fixture against the very first national side the Barbarians Women faced: USA Eagles.

Just one year after the Barbarian Women played their first international match against the USA in Glendale, Colorado, the side will take on their US counterparts in San Diego on Sunday 3 May.

Wales international Jasmine Joyce scored four tries in the thriller that saw the Barbarians Women edge USA Eagles 34-33 and the return trip guarantees another hard-fought contest.

Jo Yapp has been named as Head Coach and Rachel Taylor as Assistant Coach for the tour, reuniting the coaching team who beat Wales Women 29-15 at the Principality Stadium in November 2019.

Currently Director of Rugby for Worcester Warriors Women, former England player Yapp will bring her strong international and club coaching experience while Taylor returns to her coaching role having captained both Wales and the Barbarians before, including against USA Eagles.

John Spencer, President of the Barbarians, said: “Our Women’s side has played a remarkable amount of international rugby over the last 12 months with three exciting matches against the USA, England and Wales.

“The side is very much embedded in the wider Barbarians set-up and absolutely epitomises our values and those of our sport. We’re proud of our unique place in rugby and excited to have international superstars of the women’s game on the journey with us.

“We’re also thrilled to welcome back Jo Yapp and Rachel Taylor, who steered us to a win over Wales in November, and look forward to announcing our line-up in the coming weeks.”

Yapp said: “I’m honoured to be asked to coach the Barbarians Women again. It was great coaching alongside Rachel when we played against Wales last year and it will be fun to work with her on the Barbarians again.

“USA Eagles are a strong team in the women’s game and will present a challenge to our squad. We know we’ll have to bring a strong line-up, and I’m looking forward to confirming new Barbarians and familiar faces in the build-up to the tour.”

Emilie Bydwell, High Performance Director for the USA women’s programme, said: “We are thrilled to host the Barbarians Women for the second year in a row alongside our April High Performance Camp. The event is a critical platform in our team’s preparation for the upcoming summer competition; and after an extremely competitive game last year we’re excited for the rematch.

“We’ll also thoroughly enjoy hosting this legendary side and making new friends across the world of rugby.”

“We look forward to further collaboration with San Diego Legion to maximize the opportunity that this historical game presents; growing the profile of Women's Rugby in Southern California. We are also extremely grateful for the community of donors who supported this event through the XV Foundation because without them, our players would not have this opportunity.”

The Barbarians Women will be in the USA for a week from 28 April to 4 May and the squad will be announced over the coming weeks.
