Nicholas Campbell Farr-Jones was born on 18 April 1962 in Caringbah, New South Wales and educated at Newington College before qualifying as a solicitor at Sydney University where he played club rugby. He also played for Sydney and New South Wales and between 1984 and 1993 gained 63 caps at scrum-half for Australia, scoring nine tries. He was also his country's longest-serving captain in 36 matches, including the victorious 1991 Rugby World Cup campaign. He played for the Barbarians against New Zealand in 1989 and the foloowing year returned as captain in the Club's prestigious centenary season fixtures against England and Wales.
