Benedict James Kay was born in Liverpool on 14 December 1975 and educated at Merchant Taylors' School, Crosby, and Loughborough University. He played at lock for Waterloo and Leicester where he was a member of the Tigers' Heineken Cup winning sides in 2001 and 2002. Between 2001 and 2009 he played in 62 tests for England, including the Rugby World Cup in 2003 and 2007, and scored two tries. In 2005 Ben Kay toured New Zealand with the British Isles and played in five matches, including two tests against the All Blacks and the test against Argentina in Cardiff.
