Hugh Llewellyn Glyn Hughes was born in South Africa on 25 July 1892 but was educated in the United Kingdom at Epsom College and University College Hospital, London. He played at hooker for Blackheath where he later became president. 'Hughie' Glyn Hughes was a distinguished surgeon and soldier, becoming a brigadier, and awarded the DSO and MC for his service in the RAMC in the two world wars. He captained the Barbarians in four of his 20 appearances, became treasurer in 1928, and the Club's fourth President in 1973. In his playing days he also captained United Hospitals and Exeter and played county rugby for Middlesex and Devon. He was treasurer of the Four Home Unions Tours Committee and was assistant manager of the British side that toured Argentina in 1936. He was manager of the Barbarians first three overseas tours to Canada in 1957 and South Africa in 1958 and 1968. He died on 24 November 1973.
