Richard David Kahui was born in Tokoroa on 9 June 1985 and educated at Forest View High School. He played at centre and later wing for Te Rapa, Waikato, New Zealand Maori and the Chiefs. Between 2008 and 2011, when he was a member of the Rugby World Cup winning squad, he scored ten tries in 17 tests for New Zealand and also played for the All Blacks against Munster on the 2008 tour of Europe. In November 2011 he was a replacement full-back for the Barbarians against Australia at Twickenham.
