Derek Leslie Quinnell was born in Llanelli on 22 May 1949 and educated at Coleshill School in the town. He played test rugby for the British Isles against New Zealand in 1971, a year before he won the first of his 23 caps for Wales as a lock and no. 8. A member of the Llanelli side that beat New Zealand 9-3 in 1972, he also played for the Scarlets against Tonga in 1974, Australia in 1975 and against the All Blacks for a second time in 1980. He led West Wales against New Zealand in 1978 and captained hise club in 1979-80. His 32 appearances for the British Isles over the course of three tours to Australasia and South Africa between 1971 and 1980 included five tests and the captaincy of the Lions in five provincial matches in South Africa in 1980. His 10 games for the Barbarians included the famous game against New Zealand in 1973 and the captaincy against the same opponents five years later.
