Gareth Owen Edwards was born in Gwaun-cae-Gurwen on 12 July 1947 and educated at the local Pontardawe Technical School before going to Millfield. A world-class scrum-half who was first capped at the age of 19, he captained Wales a year later, and went on to score 85 points, including 20 tries, in 53 consecutive internationals over eleven seasons. He toured with the British Isles on three occasions and played in 39 games, including ten tests. A member of the Cardiff club, his Barbarian appearances included the 'full house' of the Big Three - South Africa (when he was captain in 1970), New Zealand (and his famous try in 1973) and Australia.
