William Gareth Davies was born in Tumble on 29 September 1956 and educated at Gwendraeth Grammar School, the University of Wales Institute of Science and Technology, and Oxford University where he gained a Blue in 1977. In a varied career, he held several managerial and executive posts with a building society, BBC Wales, CBI Wales, the Sports Council, and Cardiff RFC. He also worked on behalf of the Welsh Assembly in Sydney and then as Dean of Sport at Leeds Carnegie University. Gareth Davies was a gifted fly-half who joined Cardiff from Llanelli and set new scoring records for the Arms Park club. In 361 appearances he scored 3117 points, including 63 drop goals and 77 tries. He captained Wales in five of his 21 internationals between 1978 and 1985 and toured South Africa with the British Isles in 1980. An injury curtailed his tour after four appearances, including the second test. In 1976 he toured Canada with the Barbarians, scoring 31 points in one match against Quebec. He captained the Club against Leicester (1983 and 1984), Australia (1984) and Penarth (1986) and served on the committee from 1985 to 1989.
