Ian Robert McGeechan was born in Leeds on 30 October 1946 and played all his senior club rugby locally for Headingley. Equally adept at centre or fly-half he dropped seven goals in his 32 matches for Scotland and also captained the side nine times. A double Lion in 1974 and 1977 when he totalled eight tests in his 30 appearances, he later established a unique niche in their history by coaching the famous tourists on five tours, including series victories over Australia in 1989 and South Africa in 1997. At club level he held coaching posts with Northampton, London Wasps and Bath and guided Scotland to a Five Nations' grand slam in 1990. He also captained the Barbarians in five games - East Midlands 1974 and 1976, Cardiff 1976, and Leicester 1976 and 1977 - and the Cardiff Centenary Sevens in 1976. He served on the Barbarians committee from 1988 until 1994. Sir Ian McGeechan was knighted for his services to rugby.
