James Thomas Greenwood was born on 2 December 1928. Equally at home in all three positions in the back row, he played his club rugby for Dunfermline, Perthshire Academicals and Harlequins. He won the first of his 20 caps for Scotland at the age of 23 against France and later captained his country nine times. On the 1955 British Isles tour of South Africa he played in 16 games, including all four tests. His Barbarians' debut came in the same year and he eventually captained the Club in four of his 18 appearances and was an automatic choice for the pioneering tours to Canada in 1957 and South Africa the following year. He became a highly respected coach, especially influential with a succession of Loughborough Colleges' teams in the 1960s. Jim Greenwood died on 12 September 2010 at the age of 81.
