Craig Minto Chalmers was born in Galashiels on 15 October 1968 and educated at Melrose Grammar School and Easton High School. He played at fly-half for Melrose, Harlequins, Worcester Warriors, Pertemps Bees and the Scottish regional teams at Edinburgh, Glasgow and Border Reivers. Between 1989 and 1999 he gained 60 caps for Scotland and scored 166 points. On the British Isles tour to Australia in 1989 he played in seven matches, including the first test, and his 28 points included seven drop goals. A popular Barbarian, Craig Chalmers was part of the winning teams against Argentina in 1990 and South Africa in 1994. He was also an original selection against New Zealand in 1989 but was forced to withdraw with an injury. He captained the Barbarians against East Midlands and Cardiff in 1994 and coached the Club for the Mobbs Memorial Match against Bedford Blues in 2010.
