Michael John Campbell-Lamerton was born in Valletta, Malta, on 1 August 1933 and educated at Ottershaw School, Guildford, and Fettes College before he became a career soldier. During the course of 33 years service he rose to the rank of colonel in the Duke of Wellington's Regiment and later became bursar at Balliol College, Oxford. A formidable lock forward who could also play at number 8, he played for Halifax, Blackheath and London Scottish and between 1961 and 1966 gained 23 caps for Scotland, including two as captain. In 1962 he played 20 matches, including four tests, for the British Isles in South Africa and in 1966 was captain on the next tour to Australasia and Canada, playing in 22 matches, including four tests. He also captained the Barbarians against Swansea in 1964 and Leicester in 1966. Mike Campbell-Lamerton was the father of J.R.E. Campbell-Lamerton [q.v.]. He died on 17 March 2005, aged 71.
