Norman Michael Clifford Maxwell was born in Rawene, New Zealand, on 5 March 1976 and educated at Whangarei Boys High School. He played at lock for Linwood, Canterbury and the Crusaders and between 1999 and 2004 gained 36 caps for New Zealand. He also had experience of club rugby in Japan with Ricoh.
